Where is Romania?

Romania is tucked between Hungary and Serbia to the north, west and south west. Bulgaria is below it and the Black Sea is to the east, with Moldova lurking to the north east. There is only a small part of Romania that touches the seas and that is to the east. PWT and Imoserv are based at the opposite end, nearer to Hungary and Serbia.

Areas we cover in ROMANIA

What about Romanians themselves?

There are 22 million Romanians, of whom 2 million only are the gypsies for which perhaps Romania is best known in the UK. The Romanians we have met, whether in the cities, towns, and villages have all been delightful and genuinely welcoming. They are all cheerful, friendly and keen to help. For example, when we asked this vegetable seller if we could take his photo he asked us to send him a copy and said he wanted to pay for it!

What about the transport and road system?

Romania is rapidly catching up. The roads are not brilliant and there are some kamikaze drivers so if you hire a car you will need to take it easy. Some of our properties for sale are quite a distance (for example 10km) on gravel roads so 4x4s are useful but not essential.

The national forms of transport in Romania are horse and cart and the Datia – usually looking pretty elderly and in poor condition, but very effective. These cars were made by Renault or at least a Renault design originally. You will now see everything on the road from heavy lorries to farmers’ carts. The train service is very comprehensive (it goes far and wide!) but it is rather slow as it stops in every village.

What about Romania’s history?

1989 was a watershed for most Romanians with the overthrow of Cecesciau. The 1989 revolution started in Timisoara – a city also famous for being the first city in Europe to have electric street lighting. After the Second World War Romania became part of the Soviet Bloc and from all that everyone has said about those times, it was an extremely difficult and painful period in their history. Originally Romania had been part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and you can see this in the grand designs of the buildings in Timisoara.

How our agency operates

What language do they speak in Romania?

Perhaps not surprisingly, they speak Romanian. Many people also speak English, even the older generations who have not had the opportunities that the young now have in Romania. If you are familiar with Latin, French, Italian or Spanish you will spot many similarities with those languages as Romanian has so many historical links with the Latin part of the world.

What's happening in Romania now?

Romania is today preparing itself to join Europe in 2007. It has just changed its currency from millions of Lei by taking off four noughts (for example 1 million old Lei was around £20), this is in preparation for eventually joining the €uro. Already many things in Romania are quoted in €uros rather than the official currency and Romanians are very enthusiastic about its value.

Romanians are now investing heavily in Romania’s infrastructure – for example at the moment most of Timisoara is inaccessible in a vehicle as they are renewing the entire network of tram lines, drains, electricity, etc - all in one hit – if only London might take the same approach maybe we wouldn’t have so many roadworks in the UK!

Romanian and international businesses are working hard to redevelop their industries and commerce and Timisoara is leading the way in this in western Romania – it is a city that is at a crossroads between Hungary and the rest of Europe to the north and west, Russia and Asia to the other sides. Many multi-nationals have already come to Romania, and particularly Timisoara, partly because of its location and partly because of the availability of affordable products and labour.

Back to the future!

Of course it is not possible to predict things reliably, but if current progress is anything to go buy, in the property world, equivalent properties that are costing £500-700,000 in the Alps might cost €100-€200,000 in the mountains resorts of western Romania. (These are not just our views, these were the sort of prices quoted on a recent BBC programme on property in Romania). Already the Italians and the Germans are investing heavily in the area and the outlooks for the future are very positive.

We hope you will want to take advantage of these opportunities. Commercial and residential property has already increased in price over the last 2 years by around 20-60% in certain areas - this trend looks set to continue.

We hope you will ask PWT and Imoserv to guide you through buying your investment in Romania. Please contact us to make appointments to visit our properties in Romania. We are there to help you.
